As a high school student Adam worked on several grain farms in his Northern Illinois home town of St. Charles, a suburb forty miles west of Chicago, leading him to develop a passion for agriculture. This passion landed him at Illinois State University studying agricultural economics. On Summer break one year, he had the opportunity to work for Meadow Equipment, a Vertical Drilling contractor in Illinois. Adam’s passion for green tractors soon turned to green paper as he saw an opportunity for a well paying, stable career. After five years with Meadow Equipment Group, he had an opportunity with a large aggregate producer and was instrumental in maintaining and operating several crushing operations; including one for Geneva Construction in Aurora, Illinois. In 1993 Adam was working on a gas distribution project for Geneva Construction and had an opportunity to learn about a new process for utility installation, Horizontal Directional Drilling, and the rest is history. Adam purchased his first Vermeer in 1994 and was off and running. Gas distribution, power, street lights, sewer, water and whatever else paid the bills. In 1996 Adam agreed to join forces with a Michigan company, Mears Group, and by 1999 the Midwest division of the company headed by Adam was completing projects in excess of fifteen million dollars.
The group was purchased by Quanta Services in 2000 and Adam continued with them until 2005 when he founded Mid America Underground. Since then, the company has grown to several regional businesses and has completed projects in the U.S. and South America in excess of twenty million dollars.
Currently the group employs hundreds of employees.
Adam has a supportive family which includes his wife of 30 thirty years and a self-employed twenty 20 year old daughter, the three of them reside in Campton Hills, Illinois and Cave Creek, Arizona. He is a retired St. Charles Firefighter, he is active in fund raising for several local and global charities and is active in several contractors’ organizations.
When Adam isn’t boating or surfing with his family, he is off-road racing and off-road motorcycling and has even participated in races like the Baja 1000 and Snore 250. To support his racing interests he has developed an interest and passion for welding and fabrication, and he still loves those darn tractors!
Jim Sparks is the Executive Vice President at Mid America Underground, LLC.
In 1990 after completing education at Lake County College, Jim began his underground career at Pirtano Construction Company installing cable for local Chicago cable companies. In 1991 he moved to a crew that installed aerial cabling and Jim took to gaffing poles. It didn’t take long for him to find he was meant for the ground. In 1992 he took a job with Aldridge Electric, Libertyville, IL. installing underground service and mainline power cabling. After a brief stint in 1993 as a demolition laborer at Holian Industries, Jim decided underground is where he wanted to be and made his way back to the dirt. Directional drilling was still considered fairly new technology in 1994 and Jim jumped at the opportunity to give it try. He joined Intren, formally Trench It, and began horizontal drilling projects. By 1995 Jim became a foreman and was performing excavation, horizontal directional drilling, trenching and plowing operations. In 1997 he was given the opportunity to join Adam Bosch (MAU President) as a heavy equipment operator out of Local 150 IUOE, working for Subsite Services. In 1998 he became a Foreman for Metro Underground Services after Mears Group had purchased Subsite Services. In 2000 Quanta Services had acquired Mears and Jim moved to a Superintendent position and began running projects out of a satellite yard in Northbrook Illinois. 2002 brought a change and Jim was moved into an office position as a project manager and estimator for Metro/Mears group. In 2006 Jim made the transition to operations manager, with Adam Bosch founding Mid America Underground, LLC.
MAU steadily ramped up operations through 2017 when Jim was appointed Executive Vice President of Midwest Energy Operations.
Jim and his wife Christine, of over 20 years, are raising their two children in the rural setting of Saint Charles IL. Jim enjoys motocross with his kids and always finds some time to outlet some energy through his drumming, which is said to be heard echoing through the woods surrounding their home! Jim is also co-pilot to Adam Bosch at MGI Motorsports, an off-road desert racing team based out of Phoenix AZ.
